Browser and Technology Check

What Operating System and Browser version are you using?
Some courses may specify that you need a PC (with Windows) or a Macinstosh. Some will let you use either operating system but you will need to know what version you have. The link above will help you find the version of your operating system and the version of your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Safari, etc)

Macromedia Flash Player comes with most new browsers (download as an extra plug-in for Firefox)

  • If a Flash plug-in was detected - your version should be listed on the left.
  • If the space to the left is blank - your Flash version is older than Flash 5 and may need to download a new version. (Some courses may also require a newer version than Flash 5)

Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to be able to read and print some types of files.

Click on the PDF icon to the right to see if your browser has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

If your browser prompts you that it doesn't recognize the PDF file format, then you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader* plug-in

The Java Runtime Enviroment is needed for some interactive website.

Quicktime is one method of displaying video on the web

Real Audio and Video may also be used to display audio and video on the web.

 

  • You can test whether you have the Real Player by going to this website: http://service.real.com/realplayer/test/
  • If you don't have the Real Video Player then go to http://www.real.com/player/
    • Download the Free Player - the link to this is really hard to find!
    • Ignore the buttons that say Free Download (note the fine print under them says "14 day trial"
    • Instead click on the tiny print that says Free RealPlayer
      Then Click on the link under "Basic Player"
    • Be sure and "opt out" of any email lists or subscriptions etc (unless you really want them)
